Be Still My Soul. I have found myself sharing this song with various friends recently. It is a song from my childhood with a new twist. I think it has been so heavy on my heart because of the truth that lies behind it:
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
Oh, to learn to be fully present, to not carry various conversations and situations into the rest of our day or our family time (hello, Boundaries). We need to BE STILL. It is not us, and not our understanding, that is going to change or bring healing or resolution in a situation or person’s life, IT IS GOD! His Spirit is able to go to the deep places and move in ways that we can’t even imagine.
We are useful tools, lovingly picked up by the Master to engage the heart of the matter, but He sees every nuance that needs attention. He has other tools at His side to achieve all that is needed, to step in when we are to rest. When He places us in the position of rest, we are to do that! Rest. BE STILL. The Master is still at work. The Author and Perfecter of our faith doesn’t need to rest.
There may be some very heavy situations, some urgent things to do and speak into, but if we are not responsive to His direction for rest, what energy will we have for them?
Even crazier for us to wrap our minds around: We may not even be the tool He chooses to use for a particular piece! We are His tools. He is the Artist, the Author, the Builder. We rest by the Master’s side ready and willing. He provides what we need to be kept in good working condition. We need the rest He lovingly commands. We need to sharpen our minds with truth. We need time just sitting in His presence worshipping Him, knowing and being known. We also need connection, knowing and being known by the ones He has placed us “in the tool belt” with. And we need to understand that He’s got "this" and He’s got those around us. He WILL BE exalted among the nations! He WILL BE exalted in the earth! Praise His beautiful Name!
Be still, my soul, The Lord is on thy side Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain Leave to thy God, to order and provide In every change, He faithful will remain Be still, my soul, thy best thy heavenly friend Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end Be still, my soul, thy God doth undertake To guide the future as He has the past Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake All now mysterious shall be bright at last Be still, my soul, the waves and wind still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below In You I rest, in You I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone Be still, my soul Be still, my soul, the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord When disappointment, grief and fear are gone Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored Be still, my soul, when change and tears are past All safe and blessed, we shall meet at last In You I rest, in You I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone Be still, my soul In You I rest, in You I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone Be still, my soul Be still, my soul Be still, my soul
